Because the nose is our central facial feature, its characteristics play a large role in our overall appearance. Subtle changes to the size or shape of the nose can have a great impact on how our other facial characteristics are perceived. Rhinoplasty, also known as nose reshaping surgery, is therefore a welcomed option for patients who are unhappy with the look of their noses. This cosmetic surgery can adjust the shape of the nostrils, bridge, or tip of the nose, as well as correct bumps, crookedness, or breathing abnormalities. Dr.Jeffrey DeMercurio perform nose reshaping surgery at the Center for Plastic & Cosmetic Surgery Center, helping patients improve the balance and proportion of their face with just one procedure.
The steps of the rhinoplasty procedure remain relatively constant whether surgery is being performed for cosmetic or functional reasons. During an initial consultation with Dr.DeMercurio, you will discuss your specific needs and goals. The extent of the changes being made to the nose will determine whether open or closed rhinoplasty is performed. During closed rhinoplasty, two incisions are made inside the nostrils. In open rhinoplasty surgery, an additional incision is made across the columella (the bridge of skin that separates the nostrils), giving our surgeons more “open” access to the tissue and bone of the nose. While the extra incision in open rhinoplasty does leave a scar, it is typically very small and diminishes with time.
After the incisions have been made, your surgeon will make adjustments which may include adding or removing bone and cartilage. The entire procedure lasts up to two hours, depending on the particular case, and is performed under general or local anesthesia. Once the procedure is complete, a splint or gauze may be placed within the nose to preserve its new shape. Full recovery from nose reshaping surgery usually takes about one month, depending on the scope of the procedure.
As experienced plastic surgeons, Dr.DeMercurio have achieved optimal, natural-looking results for hundreds of patients. Even minor changes to the size or shape of the nose can positively impact a patient’s appearance, bringing harmony to the facial features. Nose reshaping surgery is a versatile procedure that can correct a number of imperfections in the nose, including bumps, crookedness, unevenness, and issues related to its size and proportion to surrounding features. Because the nose is the most dominant facial feature, changing its size and shape can also improve other areas of the face, bringing out the eyes or defining the chin. Rhinoplasty also benefits patients who experience breathing difficulties, whether from structural defects or previous injuries. Undergoing rhinoplasty surgery to correct perceived flaws can increase patient confidence, as well. While the full effects of rhinoplasty surgery may take several months to develop, the final results are permanent.
