The Rhinoplasty Procedure

The steps of the rhinoplasty procedure remain relatively constant whether surgery is being performed for cosmetic or functional reasons. During an initial consultation with Dr.DeMercurio, you will discuss your specific needs and goals. The extent of the changes being made to the nose will determine whether open or closed rhinoplasty is performed. During closed rhinoplasty, two incisions are made inside the nostrils. In open rhinoplasty surgery, an additional incision is made across the columella (the bridge of skin that separates the nostrils), giving our surgeons more “open” access to the tissue and bone of the nose. While the extra incision in open rhinoplasty does leave a scar, it is typically very small and diminishes with time.

After the incisions have been made, your surgeon will make adjustments which may include adding or removing bone and cartilage. The entire procedure lasts up to two hours, depending on the particular case, and is performed under general or local anesthesia. Once the procedure is complete, a splint or gauze may be placed within the nose to preserve its new shape. Full recovery from nose reshaping surgery usually takes about one month, depending on the scope of the procedure.
